As the Thanksgiving season approaches, the annual reminder to “not go overboard” has graced my culinary aspirations once again. There’s something about the impending holiday feast that tugs at my apron strings, urging me to recreate every cherished dish, even with just the five of us (three of whom aren’t exactly big eaters).
Maybe it’s the nostalgia, the vivid memories of past Thanksgivings with my extended family that fuels this desire to replicate each and every dish. Or perhaps a part of me fears the scarcity of options, pushing me to prepare a banquet that could sustain us well beyond a mere week—more like a Thanksgiving month extravaganza!
This year, I’ve set a goal to keep the spread under control, limiting it to fewer than six dishes. Yet, the challenge lies in choosing which classics to include and resisting the allure of Pinterest-inspired twists. Although those pumpkin-shaped rolls seem adorable, Aaron, my voice of reason, would rather avoid any Pinterest fails.
And then there’s the sweet conundrum of desserts. Pumpkin pie, cinnamon rolls, and, a personal favorite from my Kentucky family gatherings, banana pudding—I’m envisioning a Thanksgiving spread that caters to all taste buds. Our middle son seems determined to turn into a pumpkin with his relentless love for all things pumpkin-flavored, while our daughter is lobbying for a dessert lineup of cupcakes and cookies—quite the sugary demand!
It’s fascinating how certain delectable treats feel reserved for this particular holiday. I mean, who said stuffing should only grace our tables on a Thursday in November? While I entertain this culinary paradox, deep down, I’m aware that, despite my best intentions, the Thanksgiving feast may morph into a repetitive indulgence, enjoyed not just once, but again and again and again.
So, dear readers, what are your must-have Thanksgiving delights? I’m eager to hear about the dishes that make your holiday table complete! 😶
