Surviving in the Frigid North

Our winter has been relatively mild up until this week, but now it seems like the season has unleashed its full force upon us! North Dakota, known for its notoriously harsh winters, has taken a turn with temperatures plummeting to highs of 0 and windchills reaching -45. As someone not accustomed to this frozen climate and perpetually feeling cold, I’ve picked up a few survival tips for staying comfortable in such frigid conditions.

  1. Hydrate: North Dakota’s dry air becomes even more noticeable when the temperatures drop. Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and using moisturizers like lotion and chapstick can make a significant difference. In this household, a water bottle and chapstick are essential companions to prevent cracked lips.
  2. Invest in a Quality Coat: While it might be challenging to invest in winter gear for kids who outgrow things quickly, it’s crucial here as they spend a lot of time outdoors. With recess happening even in temperatures colder than -10, a quality coat with a temperature rating of 0 degrees or below is essential. I find myself donning a long puffy coat with fur trim, and after seven years, it’s still just as warm and well worth the investment.
  3. Limit Time Outside: Despite the allure of playing in the snow on beautiful winter days, staying outside for more than 10 minutes can be challenging. Opting for indoor activities, like finding brain break videos on YouTube, can help avoid the risk of exposure to the extreme cold. While I understand not everyone can stay indoors, especially in certain circumstances, it’s best to limit outdoor exposure until temperatures are less severe.
  4. Make Your Own Fun: Creating indoor activities helps combat the feeling of confinement during extended periods indoors. Blowing bubbles and watching them freeze, followed by enjoying hot chocolate or tea while engaging in board games or reading, is a family favorite. Baking is also a cherished pastime, not only for the extra heat it brings to the house but also for the comforting indulgence of warm, freshly baked treats.

While some of these tips may be well-known, I’ve found that incorporating these practices helps me navigate the challenges of the long winter months. Do you have any tricks for staying sane during the cold and dark days?
