Hello Folks,
well it ha been a hot minute since we last updated yall on what the Fantabulous 5 has been up to. We have had a pretty full schedule with school events, baby milestones, and what I am going to share with you today….dealing with a sourdough bandit!
I was feeling pretty good about not killing the Thing yet and had been taking things slow since our last loaf attempt ended in tears, and it wasnt because the bread was bad! If you can recall our white wolf of a dog ATE THE ENTIRE LOAF….well all except a few slices we took as a taste test but still it was devastating to our kiddos.
I was finally feeling like I had time to attempt more with the Thing besides just feeding it. So I made sourdough donuts….the bandit struck down child #2 and inhaled the donut. Annoying, but we had plenty more so wasn’t so bad even if tears were shed AGAIN. We decided to make a few loaves of sourdough for the week and see if we could establish baking sandwich bread at home. Our middle son was excited to make our own bread and have grilled cheese the following day for dinner. He was so excited he literally made one of the loaves on his own! It was a 2 day process, but we had successfully baked two large loaves of sourdough bread ( his even looked better than mine!) and we both were feeling proud of ourselves. Seeing how large the loaves ended up being, we decided to gift my loaf to my parents as they were heading back to their state after a visit and keep the loaf our son made.
All was well until bedtime. I had forgotten the bandit dog was inside and as Aaron and I were tucking our oldest 2 into bed I mentioned he should move the bread before it disappeared. Not joking, as he walked into the kitchen he saw the theif redhanded….err sourmouthed? anyway he caught the dog with 2/3rd of the loaf down her throat and the other 1/3 dropped on the floor covered in drool. To say we had a very disappointed family would be an understatement! There were more tears, and the loss of 2 days work hit our little guy hard.
So what have we learned in our extended absence? 1.)that our dog really can’t resist the lure of sourdough no matter where we think it might be safe. 2.) the investment of a bread lockbox might be a good idea and 3.) sometimes we work hard and the result doesn’t end how we want and thats alright. It doesn’t mean to give up, it shows dedication to what we love and grit to get up and do it all over again and I hope that this is the lesson our kids remember when we look back and most likely laugh at this story.
